Kathmandu- Gen-Z activists Majid Ansari, Raksha Bam, along with other representatives, have announced that they will not participate in the government-organized dialogue on constitutional amendments. They made the decision public after rejecting an invitation sent by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Baisakh 30.
In a joint statement, the activists said that Nepal’s Constitution is not perfect and requires timely amendments. However, they stressed that democracy should be strengthened not only through written laws but also through transparent, accountable, and participatory processes. They also emphasized that any constitutional amendment debate must respect the mandate of past mass movements, consensus, and inclusive procedures.
The statement expressed dissatisfaction with the government, noting that individuals involved in the Gen-Z movement are still facing legal cases, families of martyrs and injured protesters have not received justice, and reports related to the movement have not been made public. They also alleged that a 10-point agreement reached with the government on Mangsir 24 has not been implemented.
The activists criticized the committee formed for constitutional amendment discussions, calling it one-sided, and demanded that the government disclose its formation process, member selection criteria, and rationale.
They further stressed that any constitutional amendment must preserve Nepal’s core constitutional values, including sovereignty, the federal democratic republic system, secularism, inclusiveness, human rights, press freedom, and an independent judiciary.
The Gen-Z activists have urged the government to fulfill six key demands before they participate in any future dialogue. These include implementation of agreements made with the Gen-Z movement, withdrawal of cases against protest participants, justice for martyrs’ families, publication of protest-related reports, an end to state repression, and formation of a high-level constitutional amendment commission through broad national consultation.
