Kathmandu - Smriti of Krishnanagar Municipality-8 Bahadurgunj has become the first female doctor from the Harijan Madhesi Dalit community, especially Chamar, Dom, and Musahar, to date. Smriti's achievement is exemplary in that the discrimination created in society can be broken through education.

Smriti's achievement is not just her personal success. Smriti, who completed MBBS from Janaki Medical College, Janakpur on a scholarship from the Government of Nepal, is currently doing her internship in Janakpur. After completing her internship, she will have to serve for two years as per the government's plan. Smriti, who studied secondary level from the local Ram Gorkha Secondary School, was good at studying since childhood. 'It is difficult for women from our community to even pass the eighth grade. When they start studying in the higher grades, there are attempts to stop them, there is still the idea that lower castes should not study.' Smriti says, 'I am the first, but not the last.

The struggle of Santaram (her father) and the suffering of being a Dalit The life of Smriti's father, Santaram Harijan, is an inspiring story in itself. After passing his SLC in 2039 BS, he became an assistant police inspector in the Nepal Police. However, after arresting an influential person, he had to lose his job on a false charge of 'taking a bribe of three thousand rupees'.

After that, he embraced the teaching profession. Even after earning wages, loans and selling jewelry, he did not let his children compromise on their education. The youngest daughter, Dr. Smriti, has become the first Dalit female doctor in Nepal. The eldest daughter, Srijana, is currently studying MBA (Finance) in the UK. Her journey from the village to a prestigious educational institution in Europe is extraordinary in itself. Her son, Sandeep, is studying Computer Science and Engineering at the prestigious technical institute of India, NIT Rourkela. Smriti Harijan's success is not just a personal victory. After passing the Nepal Medical Council examination (NMC), Smriti has been showered with congratulations on social media.
