Kathmandu– Renowned Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92. Her son confirmed the news on Sunday.
One of the most respected voices in Indian music, Bhosle’s death marks the end of an era in South Asian music. She was among the key artists, along with her sister Lata Mangeshkar, who helped shape the golden age of Hindi film music.
Bhosle began her singing career in 1943 as a child artist. Although she initially worked in the shadow of her elder sister, she later established her own distinct identity in the music industry. She became especially famous for dance numbers and cabaret-style songs in films.
Her iconic songs include “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,” “Yeh Mera Dil,” “Dum Maro Dum,” and “O Haseena Zulfon Wali.” During the 1960s and 1970s, many hit songs featuring actress Helen were voiced by her.
Bhosle also contributed to Nepali cinema and music. She lent her voice to several Nepali songs, including “Mohani Lagla Hai.” During a visit to Nepal, she had said that singer Danny Denzongpa taught her how to sing Nepali songs.
With her passing, the South Asian music industry has lost one of its most iconic and historic voices.
