A United Nations maritime agency has reported that nearly 1,500 ships have been left stranded due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The organization’s Secretary-General, speaking at a conference in Panama on Thursday, said that restrictions imposed by Iran have led to a large number of vessels and crew members being stuck in the Gulf region.
According to him, around 1,500 ships and approximately 20,000 crew members are currently affected by the situation.
The report comes after escalating conflict in the Middle East following military tensions initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28. The escalation has disrupted one of the world’s key trade routes, the Strait of Hormuz, restricting the free movement of vessels in the area.
The maritime body warned that the current situation poses a serious challenge to global trade and supply chains.
