A hantavirus infection has been confirmed on the Dutch vessel MV Hondius, where five people have tested positive and three have died.
According to a BBC report, at least two Indian nationals are also among those on board the ship. The vessel was carrying around 150 passengers from 28 countries. Dozens of passengers disembarked at Saint Helena Island on April 24.
The ship is scheduled to dock in the Canary Islands later this week.
World Health Organization (WHO) expert Maria Van Kerkhove said during a press briefing that the situation is not similar to COVID-19.
She clarified that hantavirus does not spread as easily as coronavirus and is mainly transmitted through close and direct contact.
