Kathmandu- Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Vikram Timsina has said that the government has prioritized reforms in the telecommunications sector, media policy, and the overall communication system, and has been advancing improvement efforts based on necessary studies.

Speaking at a press meet organized at the ministry today, Minister Timsina acknowledged that it is challenging to systematically manage all sectors at once within a short period, but stressed that the government is working according to set priorities. He said the focus is on improving the quality of telecom services, expanding competition, and organizing the communication sector more effectively.

The minister clarified that there is no immediate plan to discontinue 4G services and shift directly to 5G. He said the government is instead working to further improve 4G services while gradually implementing 5G. He added that preparations, including frequency allocation and management, are underway as 5G rollout remains a priority.

He also said the government is studying the possibility of introducing a third mobile operator to increase competition in the telecom sector. Currently, two companies provide mobile services in Nepal, and the feasibility of a third operator is being assessed to improve service quality and market competition.

Minister Timsina stated that the government is committed to strengthening Nepal Telecom, utilizing telecom infrastructure in the public interest, and making the overall system more robust. He added that the ministry is in regular coordination and consultation with Nepal Telecom and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.

He further said the government is seriously addressing issues related to billing systems and service management in Nepal Telecom. According to him, problems will be resolved within the legal framework, ensuring transparency and avoiding disputes, given that the institution involves both public investment and government responsibility.

On digital infrastructure, the minister said the government is studying the development of data centers and the broader digital ecosystem. He noted that interest from multinational companies, digital feasibility, and foreign investment potential are being assessed, with the aim of developing Nepal as a regional data center hub.

He emphasized that the government is committed to preventing misuse of public assets and systemic corruption. He added that relevant state mechanisms will be activated if any irregularities are reported, and urged citizens to provide relevant information.

Stressing the importance of democracy, Minister Timsina said independent and responsible journalism is essential for strengthening democratic governance. He added that democracy cannot be strong without a strong media sector and urged media houses to improve professionalism and accountability.

He also expressed commitment to policy reforms related to advertising distribution, media sustainability, and journalists’ welfare. The ministry, he said, is coordinating with relevant agencies to address issues related to government advertising and ensure fair and effective management.
