The Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Máximo Torero, has warned that the world is heading toward a major food crisis.
According to him, tensions between the United States and Iran have led to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, severely affecting fertilizer supply. He said that fertilizer shipments have nearly halted since the conflict began, leading to rising prices and shortages.
Torero warned that this situation could significantly impact agricultural production, potentially reducing crop yields by up to 30 percent. This, he said, may further increase global food prices in the coming days.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, he noted that the crisis is deepening, particularly in Asia. He also pointed out that major agricultural producers such as the United States and Brazil may shift their crop patterns, increasing soybean production instead of wheat and maize, which could further destabilize global markets.
