Kathmandu- The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that three people have died following a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship traveling in the Atlantic Ocean.

The incident occurred on the cruise ship “MV Hondius,” which was en route from Ushuaia in Argentina to Cape Verde.

According to WHO, one case of hantavirus infection has been confirmed through laboratory testing, while five additional cases are suspected.

Out of the six total affected individuals, three have died, and one patient is currently in critical condition at a hospital in South Africa.

South Africa’s Health Ministry said the incident initially appeared as a “severe acute respiratory illness,” which led to at least two deaths, with one patient remaining in critical condition in Johannesburg.

The WHO stated that hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. It also noted that, in rare cases, human-to-human transmission may be possible, and the virus can cause severe respiratory complications.

Initial reports suggest that symptoms first appeared in a 70-year-old male passenger, who died on board the ship. His 69-year-old wife was later transferred to South Africa, where she also passed away.

The third victim is reported to be a 69-year-old British national who is currently in critical condition in Johannesburg.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media that medical evacuation, risk assessment, and emergency response operations are ongoing for the affected passengers. He emphasized that only rapid and coordinated action can help control such health risks.

Following the incident, discussions are ongoing between the ship operator and relevant countries regarding treatment, isolation measures, and future travel arrangements. (AFP)
